I love the ingredients of s'mores, but I have a few issues with the way thse ingredients come together. First, I think that graham crackers are a subpar sandwich base, because they're so hard. When you bite into a s'more, you too often lose half the filling out the back, or the cracker splinters and the s'more falls apart entirely. Also, I prefer my marshmallow very hot and mostly burnt, but I want my chocolate warm -- neither cold nor melted. That's why I decided to experiment with mini graham cracker pie crusts (and Nestle's Crunch and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, for good measure). In the end I found that this approach addressed my concerns and was mostly a huge improvement, although I'm sure eating s'mores with a spoon will offend the romantics out there. The only issue was that these particular mini pie crusts were too thin and dry. Doubling up might have helped, but maybe next time I'll just have to make my own. /dp
S’more Better S’Mores
Her purse is always stocked with one specific condiment, in case of emergency.
Graham crackers splinter upon bite impact, resulting in a s'more experience I'd like to have s'less. So with help from some friends, I recreated a campfire in my lab to experiment with improvements.
Want to have fun cooking with your kids, and get them so high on sugar that they'll clean up the mess? If you're like me, you love s'mores. But after all these years of campfire greatness, I think they need some new ideas.
