Someone Loves Us In Alpena

The Sporkful

Our podcasting software tells us where folks are downloading us from, so it's neat to see where various cities rank. In the U.S., the top five are New York, San Francisco, Seattle, LA and DC. It's not scientific, because technically, the number one American location by far is "Unknown."

But our audience is urban, suburban and rural. And lately I've been curious about a place all the way at the bottom of the list. In this mysterious city, a mere one person has downloaded Sporkful. We'd really like to hear from this person and learn more about this city.

The city is Alpena, South Dakota. Or maybe it's Alpena, Michigan. Or it could be an Alpena somewhere else in America that isn't showing up in searches. No way to tell.

As you can imagine, both Alpenas are small towns. The South Dakota city has just over 200 people. Michigan's, just under 30,000. Alpena, South Dakota is in the east central part of the state. Michiganders brandishing their "mitten" would locate that Alpena at the very tip of the index finger, right on Lake Huron.

Alpena, MI has a website promising a "warm and friendly port." The other Alpena's site touts that it's home to a Jack Link's Beef Jerky plant, meaning its handiwork is likely in a convenience store near you. But other than that, we don't know much. So we need your help. If you live in or you've ever been to either Alpena, tell us what it's like in the comments. Let us know what's special about it, and more importantly, what's good to eat there. (If you work at that jerky plant, do hook us up.)

And if you are the mysterious one Alpena downloader, definitely speak up now, as we want to know why you haven't told your neighbors about us! /mark
