Unusual Grilled Cheeses — But Are They Really Grilled Cheeses?

The Sporkful

If you can remember as far back as the very first episode of The Sporkful, when this enterprise was far from the transglobal media conglomerate it is today, you'll recall that Mark and I had a spirited debate about exactly when a sandwich crosses the line between grilled cheese and toasted sandwich or panini. Mark took a hard line, arguing that the moment you add anything besides bread, cheese, and butter, you no longer have a grilled cheese. I argued that accompaniments such as tomato and other seasonings are okay, and that only when you add more substantial ingredients does it cross over. Enter this article, entitled "Unusual Grilled Cheese Sandwiches." It offers recipes that include things like cilantro-garlic oil, sun-dried tomatoes, and dried cranberries. So I ask you: Which of these sandwiches are worthy of the title of this article? Which are grilled cheeses, and which cross the line? /dp
