Sporkful fan J, last seen here seeking your guidance on useful sauces while he's serving in Iraq (keep the advice coming, of course), sent some pics from the mess hall. Looks like your basic hearty holiday feast. But check out the beer on offer: Astra, straight out of Hamburg, Germany. Sure, its logo is extremely awesome, but I figured some corporate beer lobbyist would have gotten a law passed forcing the Pentagon to serve only American brands.
And don't worry, the troops are not getting tanked in the field. J says they serve non-alcoholic beer in the mess hall. He says they're guaranteed a couple real beers for special occasions like the Super Bowl. He says he always hopes for "something with lots of hops, a fine craft brew," but takes whatever he can get. Note the other photo for some serious melon carving. Someone in the kitchen went well beyond the Call of Duty. /markAmerican Troops Drinking German Beer in Iraq
Turns out neither of these guys is who you think they are.
Iran used to be a country where people brewed and drank beer, openly and freely. Back Home Beer pays homage to that culture.
