Should Potato Salad Be Called A Salad?

This week's episode of The Sporkful podcast is up! Listen through the player or iTunes/Podcasts app. (And please subscribe!)

What makes a salad -- a salad?

Is it the presence of greens and dressing? Does temperature matter? And what role, if any, should mayo play?

In this bonus mini-episode of The Sporkful, Lila, a high school student from Los Angeles (below), calls into The Sporkful to debate the true definition of salad with Dan and Serious Eats food science guru Kenji Lopez-Alt, author of The Food Lab cookbook.

"When people call potato salad and pasta salad a salad, this is a corruption of the term," Lila argues. "It's a deceitful presentation of salad."

So what is the definition of a salad then? If a pasta salad is some kind of salad, should it be distinguished more explicitly from a Caesar? If so, how?

Listen in to the episode for the exciting resolution of this evergreen (shameless pun intended!) debate.
