It’s that season when we take stock of the past year of eating and pause to consider our meals in the new year ahead.
To that end, we have two year-end traditions at The Sporkful:
- replaying our favorite episode from the past year
- revealing our New Year's Food Resolutions
Our favorite episode of the year is (drum roll, please)...
Drinking and eating in the shower!
One of the criteria we use to pick our favorite episode of the year is that we want a show that's a little weird, a little off the beaten path, and therefore a little more likely to have been missed. This one fits the bill.
First up, Max from Denver calls in to ask about drinking in the shower. He's a fan of the good old-fashioned shower beer (featured at top).
But Max's friend Gina (also in Denver) takes bath time consumption to a whole new level -- with ice cream sandwiches in the shower (below).
Gina says the steam heat from the shower defrosts the ice cream sandwich more efficiently than dry heat. The result is an ice cream sandwich that's just the right level of meltiness.
We also talk to Elite Truong, Sporkful contributor and thought leader in shower consumption. She pairs her snacks and drinks with the temperature of her shower. Cooler water is great for iced coffee, cold beer, or chilled wine, while hot water goes well with hot drinks and soup:
The real question is: Can eating or drinking in the shower actually make the food or drink better?
Elite says yes, and points to one of the greatest soup experiences of her life -- the time she had jalapeno miso soup in the shower. (Here's her recipe.)
But will Dan's own shower eating and drinking experiments confirm Elite's findings?
Listen in to the full episode to find out what happens when Dan takes an ice cream sandwich into his own shower.
As for our New Year's Food Resolutions...
I resolve to eat and drink in the shower! Dan resolves to bake his own bread. (Dan's past resolutions include MSG, fried plantains, and grilled onions.)
What's your New Year's Food Resolution? Leave us a message in the comments below or chime in on Facebook and Twitter. And if you made a resolution with us last year, tell us how you did!
